INTRODUCTION TO CANADA

CURRENCY

Canadian paper money comes in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. Coins come in 1 cent (penny), 5 cents (five cents or nickel), 10 cents (ten cents or a dime), 25 cents (25 cents or a quarter), $1 (loonie), and $2 (toonie).

Taxes are added to prices in Western Canada. (6% provincial sales tax (PST) and 7% Goods and Service tax (GST)). The price you see on items is not the final price you pay. For example, if you buy a $10 item, it will costs $11.30, because 60 cents PST and in most cases 70 cents GST will be added to the price.
