Agricultural Mechanic

This company was established in 1984 and has grown to three different locations in Western Canada.  The company provides mechanical service and repair to farmers in their area.  They also sell new and used farm equipment in their local communities such as New Holland, Bourgault, Flexi-Coil and Honey Bee machines.  In total, it employs 104 people in its three locations.  In their twenty years of business, they have never layed off employees even when times were difficult (drought years etc).  The owners of the company are very kind people with strong religious beliefs.  This company is seeking six agricultural mechanics.

The company provides service calls with fully equipped service vans along with airplanes and have pilots on staff to send mechanics to farms who need service quickly.

  • Some of the key skills needed for this job include:

  • Repairing and servicing engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems and electrical systems in agricultural equipment

  • Communicating with customers and service managers

  • Using hand and power tools as well as various testing equipment to check systems

  • Keeping up with changes in technology affecting agricultural equipment

  • Ability to understand service repair manuals in English

  • Pinpoint problems by discussing equipment options with owners, visually checking and listening to machinery in operation and using testing equipment

  • Take defective units apart and repair and replace broken, worn out or faulty parts

  • Strength required to lift heavy machine parts, up to 25 kilograms

  • Ability to get along with farm people and an appreciation of the work attitudes that are important in a rural community

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Working Conditions

Mechanics will work in the comfort of fully equipped service center or may have to travel to farms to make service calls. Hours of work vary from regular hours during the winter to long and hectic hours during planting and harvesting seasons.  The work is often dirty and greasy and there is some risk of injury from hot engines and sharp edges.  New employees will need to apply for a drivers license after they arrive.

 

Wages and Benefits

 The starting wage for this job is $9.50 per hour which translates into $1520 Canadian dollars per month.  New employees should expect this to rise to $12.00 after two years and $14.00 - $20 in the years afterwards.  This occupation provides excellent stability and high wages for those who can commit to the company for the long term.  Many of their most senior employees make $21 per hour.  The company guarantees that employees will have at least Monday to Friday 8-5 work throughout the year.  

The company is also willing to provide extensive training to each new employee to insure that they constantly can upgrade their skills to repair new technology. 

There is a three-month probationary period for all new employees.  Once the worker has passed the probationary period, they will be enrolled in the company’s medical plan which covers 80% of the dental costs, 80% of prescription drugs, vision, short term disability and long term disability and life insurance.   The cost of this private medical insurance is shared by the employee ($100) and employer ($100) for a total cost per month of $200 Canadian dollars.   

Immigration and Company Requirements

  • Married with children (willing to immigrate to Canada permanently)

  • At least 3 years work experience as an agricultural or car mechanic 

  • 26-42 years old

  • Knowledge of Agricultural Equipment would be preferred

  • Basic Knowledge of English (IELTS score not necessary)

  • Mechanic Trade Certificate

  • Sincere Desire to work for this employer for at least 5 years

  • No relatives in Canada (we do not want to find people who already have relatives in Canada as they tend not to remain with the employer for a long time)

  • Completed at least 2-3 years of technical college relating to agricultural mechanics 

  • If they have personal savings of more than $10,000 Canadian dollars this would help their application

  • No Criminal Record

  • Preferably no work experience overseas exceeding six months (they will be required to obtain a police certificate from the country in which they worked – delays the application too much)

  • Health Family (principal applicant, spouse and children)

  • Currently working as mechanic (if they have changed occupation then they do not qualify)

 Community Description

 The population of the local community is 700 people.   The winters are cold and the summers are mild.  For a 100 square meter apartment, the rental cost is between $250-400 Canadian dollars per month.  Taxes are roughly 17-20% of your income.  The company is located inside the small town and employees can walk to work.  Everything is very close and convenient.  

There is employment for the spouse in surrounding towns; restaurant waitresses, cleaning jobs, and nursing staff in near-by retirement homes.  If the spouse has a driver’s license, then finding a job would not be a problem in the area as there are many job opportunities.

四. 农业机械技术工人的技术和能力的要求

工人必须愿意用他们的双手工作并且有能力诊断各种复杂的机械问题。

l            能过举起重机器所要求的强度,机器达到或超过25公斤的重量

l            阅读或了解技术手册的能力
